Recently, recently, I took on an extra duty besides writing. This summer I went into business with my friend Viv to become a personal assistant to other authors.
You ask, why pile more work on yourself or you haven’t got time to write?
That is a really good question!
The answer is simple or maybe not Viv and I discussed the idea of going into business together in order to help fellow authors. As writers ourselves, we realized that there are publicists who will charge a lot for what they offer. Don’t get me wrong but it is their right to do so. However, not all authors make a lot of money to be able to afford expensive promotional experts. We are starving artists and we really can’t afford much.
That being said, we do charge but we are mindful of the financial situations of the people we represent. Therefore, we decided on a sliding scale depending on the kind of services they needed and how much coverage they wanted through the week.
The main thing is, we have fun doing what we do. The authors we represent have a wide variety of books. This keeps things interesting. We even set up a schedule for what we promote on any given day from Monday to Friday. Yes, we do take weekends off to attend to our own needs like shameless self-promotion and maybe some writing!
Some of the things we do for our authors:
organize and run special events like cover reveals and book launches.
Promoting our authors and their books on social media like Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr etc.
organize blog tours for new books.
It looks busy doesn’t it? But the special events don’t happen every day maybe once a month depending on the author you have a few authors that are rather prolific and keep putting books out there and require a lot of special attention. Most of what we do is the day to day promoting. We pride ourselves on great customer service. Keeping our authors happy is a key ingredient to success of any personal assistant, promotion specialist or whatever we want to call ourselves.
I know what you might be thinking.
Is there a lot of competition between different PAs?
The answer to that is a resounding no. Many authors have different PAs at the same time and it we cooperate with those personal assistants to make things run smoother for the writer. We are friends with some of those PAs because we can sit there and vent when things aren’t going right and congratulate each other on a job well done after an event.
It is his sister/brotherhood of personal assistants so we are one big happy family.
Viv and I love the work we do and hope to be doing it for years to come.
