Blake Arbuthnot designs covers for romance novels. He also poses for a lot of them. One series in particular, has made him well known, the Parker Dewitt series, written by a former girlfriend, Alyce. No longer together, they are still very fond, so when Blake finds out Alyce’s boyfriend is mistreating her, he asks his parents to intervene on his behalf, since he’s out of town.
“I’ll take your father and head over. If I know that girl, she’ll waffle. One thing about her, she’s bright as a new penny, but dumb as a rock. Sweet and lovely, but weak willed. I’m on my way.”
“Thanks, Mama. I love you like a mother.”
She giggled. “I love you like a son. Harry, we’re on an errand of mercy.”
“Let me grab my keys, Mother,” my dad said. “What are we doing?”
She hung up without saying goodbye and I knew Mom was on the job. She is a formidable woman. I knew she’d help Alyce and even take on the Devil himself if necessary. And the fucking Devil would run, if he was smart.
