A LAURA ANDSTELLA ENCOUNTER
I worked in the baby’s room and washed some clothes Janice had given me from Joel’s baby days. While in the community laundry room, Stella came in loaded for bear about her ex and let it be known to all and sundry that men were ass holes! As I wasn’t in any mood to quibble with her, I just let it go, without trying to engage Stella in conversation.
“Cat got your tongue. Mrs. Fitz?”
“No but I’ve had a rough day so I am just trying to keep things to myself.” I was hoping the woman would take the hint and shut up. She went on, so apparently subtle hints weren’t going to work.
“Is Junior kicking much?” Stella was obviously curious about my pregnancy. Actually, she was downright nosy.
“Not really.” I muttered. I knew it was a lie but giving her details would just invite a conversation I didn’t want.
“Are you getting weird midnight cravings?” She went on again. “I recall when I had my son, I craved everything.”
I was visibly surprised at this revelation. “Really, I don’t recall you saying anything about having kids.”
Snidely, she answered. “I don’t recall you ever asking Laura!”
