Death Comes to Call is my current work in progress. It’s a bit different from me. Not only is the main character in her early seventies, it’s not specifically a romance, but will be more of a ghost story. I’m anxious to see where it will go.
Polly and her family are guests at Mrs. Hargrove’s antebellum home in Mississippi. Belle Chase was built before the Civil War and is said to be haunted, particularly by the plantation’s first owner.
“The original land owners, not my kin, were brutal folks and they beat more than one poor soul to death.”
“How dreadful! You haven’t seen them?” Bessie asked, wide eyed.
“My great-granddaddy swore he’d seen the ghost of Ephraim Gage, the man who established the plantation, but he’d been sampling his bourbon.”
“Ole Ephraim got hisself hung,” Jefferson said as he came back in with a tray of bowls. “He whooped one too many of his men, and the women strung him up. Mean old reprobate deserved it. Story is, his ghost wanders around looking for sympathy.”
